Special Event Scanner Feeds

Overview

This wiki page will establish links to area special event feeds. These feeds come online only during a breaking emergency event or long term special event such as dignitary visits, airshows, etc. They are normally streamed directly from the feed providers home as opposed to via Radio Reference. This will be a work in progress not only building this page but also talking scannists into making such feeds available! Available feeds will be listed by state with region coverage in the description.

Methods

The easiest way to provide a special event scanner feed at this time is via "Radiofeed" software, available free from the Proscan website. Detailed instructions are available via RR at the RadioFeed Setup Instructions Wiki page at that website. See the Web Server Setup section. There is a sticky thread in the Live Scanner Feeds forum of this website where some basic setup support can be offered. The most difficult thing about doing this is opening up a port on your router to allow requests to access the feed to pass through to the correct computer. The result? A very neat and low profile webpage that allows listeners to click a link and have the feed load in their favorite audio player. The load on most modern Comcast-type internet connections should be minimal, and will only increase as more users connect. It is possible to stream alpha tags as well with the scanners supported by RadioFeed for such an option.

Implementation

Once you have the feed set up, contact me and I will provide you a subdomain link to your feed's webpage. This works as a forwarding mechanism. For example the special event feed I provide has a link of http://capeevents.scan-ne.net . When a user clicks the link they are actually forwarded directly to the external IP address and port for my feed. If you're in Worcester providing a special event feed, your link could be worcester.scan-ne.net. You still host the audio, you just get a "front-end" scan-ne.net subdomain address to direct users there. While this is certainly not a requirement to have a special event feed listed here it offers a level of uniformity and makes remembering links easier for end users. Restrictions

If you wish to have your special event feed listed at Scan New England you will agree not to stream any public safety events or incidents that contain communications from covert, surveillance, stakeout or other sensitive operations. You will not stream/rebroadcast any commercial content or any other communications as deemed illegal by law or without prior permission. Violations will result in your feed being removed from this list permanently.
